Black Turnstone III
Arenaria melanocephala
Often the birds were feeding just at the edge of the water. When a small wave washed up, they would stand there as in this picture. However, when larger waves threatened to wash over them, they would suddenly jump into the air and fly back a very short distance to avoid getting too wet. Occasionally a bird would misjudge a wave and the water would splash over the bird's head.
