Description:

This course will engage students in the world of birds and birdwatching with an emphasis on birds in the Sitka area. Topics covered will vary by semester, but will include basic and intermediate techniques for observing and identifying birds in the field. There will be a required field component.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:
  1. Identify common species of birds in the Sitka area.
  2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of one or more topics related to bird behavior, life history, or biology.

Course Requirements:

  1. Written summaries of class presentations
  2. Birding Journal with observations from required bird walks
  3. Personal list of species observed during course
  4. Satisfactory score on final exam

Teaching Strategies:

  1. Class sessions will include identification quizzes for practice with field guides
  2. Guest speakers will present on topics related to birds and birding
  3. Birding walks will be required to better acquaint students with the birds of Sitka and how to observe and identify them in the field

The final grade will be composed of the following components:
