Guidelines
You are to evaluate at least 9 articles using the ideas you have learned
this semester. Be sure to address all applicable aspects of the article
that we have covered in chapters 1-14. Recall that often reports in the
popular press do not include all of the information that might be necessary
to evaluate a study completely. Make sure to distinguish between weakness in
the original study and information that is missing from the report. The most
common mistake people make in this
assignment is misclassifying the type of study being reported on. In most
cases, it is a good idea to ask about the articles to make sure they fit
in the category for which you are intending them.
What you should turn in
- A cover sheeet consisting of the requirement tables with an
indication of which article meets the requirement.
- Photocopy of each article with summary page attached (10pts each for 9 articles)
- Each article should have an additional attached page for every specific non-summary
category you want to use that article for.
Guidelines for the Aritcle Critiques
- General Summary Page (10pts each article)
-
- All submitted material should be properly cited
- Give a one or two paragraph summary of the article.
- In an outline format follow Guidelines from Chapter 6:
Be sure to distinguish between what's in the article and what may or may not have
been done in the actual research.
- Identify the type of research
- Be sure to Address each of the 7 components in Ch 2
- difficulties and disasters, do they apply?
- Information complete?
- Results Make sense?
- Alternative explanation?
- Results meaningful->encourage you to change?
- Explain the extent to which you think the article can be used to evaluate the research?
- 1 advertisement (5pts)
- Identify one of the concepts covered and how it is used
- Anchoring
- Probability
- 2 Experiments (10 pts each)
- What are the variables? (explanatory? response?)
- What are the conclusions?
- To what group do the conclusions most clearly apply?
- Can the conclusions reasonably be extended to other groups?
- What difficulties and disasters in Experiments, if any, may cause problems with this study?
- 2 Observational Studies (10 pts each)
