Course: Quantitative Literacy and Reasoning

Text: Seeing Through Statistics Third Edition, by Jessica M. Utts

Prerequisites:

Math 085 or satisfactory score on placement exam

Description:

An introduction to mathematical and statistical ideas necessary to be an informed and appropriately critical consumer of information.

Objectives:

Students will be able to:
  1. Use basic numerical and probabilistic reasoning as an aid to understanding the world
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts in probability
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of basic concepts in inferential statistics
  4. Critically evaluate news articles with quantitative and/or statistical content

Course Requirements:

  1. Completion of assigned homework
  2. Regular attendance and active participation in class
  3. An article project consisting of a written evaluation of articles
  4. Satisfactory performance on all exams

Teaching Strategies:

  1. Lectures, student presentations, and class discussion will all be used.
  2. Homework will be assigned to encourage greater understanding of subjects covered in class
  3. Exams and quizzes may be given to assess each student's understanding of the material.

Evaluation and Criteria for Grading:

The final grade will be composed of the following components:

Final Exam:

Final Exam is 1:50-3:30pm on Wednesday, 9 May. You are expected to take the test at that time, please make travel arrangements accordingly.
