Vertical Rootmass
Jonathan is standing in front of a large mass of roots which were pulled up when the tree they fed fell. I estimate that the height of this rootmass is 20 feet; the top is not visible in this picture. Forest succession in Southeast Alaska takes place primarily through the wind knocking trees over, however in this case, it was likely helped by the river undercutting the tree.
