Waiting for Spring
This is the tip of a branch on an alder (Alnus sp.) tree. They prepare for spring by growing buds encased in protective coverings in the late summer and fall. I suspect that the three things on the end will become catkins (used in reproduction) while the other redish buds will become leaves.
